The American Identity, Democracy and the State..

America practices near perfect democracy for its own territories. This democratic set up has been weaved around the grand notion of infallibility of the American Identity. Every American, irrespective of  his or her class, race, religion, gender and linguist affiliations, takes immense pride of  his or her national identity. He is trained that way by the American constitution which empowers  him or her with individual rights and privileges, by and large, based on egalitarian principles. The American legislative, executive and judicial institutions further affirm his or her belief  in the fairness of  its democratic fabric by virtue of  more or less egalitarian ways of  functioning. One unknown investigative officer, Kenneth Star, could investigate and pronounced  the then president of  America, Bill Clinton, guilty in the infamous Monica Lewinsky case, speaks volumes to the strength of  the functioning and deliverance of  the American system. The  popular American information mediums such as journalism, literature, cinema etc., take absolute care while dealing with issues involving the American Identity. These mediums  never show the American state, policies or events in negative light. Instead these seek every opportunity to glorify and rather eugolize the pride of every American citizen behind the national identity. Thus, huge mass of  the American citizens assembling voluntarily to remove the debris of  the Twin Tower, post terror strike, or the voluntary self censorship of the American media  not to show the American blood  sprints sprayed over the terror hit area further attest to the infallibility of the American identity for every American citizen. Instances and examples of  the infallibility of the American identity simply gets multiplied if probed further deeper.

The American citizens, so trained, actually take immense pride in his or her American identity. The sub- identities- that of race, religion, community or linguist affiliations could voluntarily be put on hold if  these come to compete with the national identity. The state also does not differentiate amongst its citizens on these lines in matters of rights and privileges. This, in turn, also makes them responsible to contribute to the overall growth of their nation, in whatever capacities they pursue their professional lives. Such inspirations work wonders for the American work culture. One hardly needs to sermonize an average American citizen to be uprightly honest towards the work he or she pursues.

America bashing may be a popular political and intellectual theme in other parts of the world and particularly in India. But the bashing lacks credibility. Hardly any part of the world , with India included in its ambit , pays attention to the national identity so much so as the Americans do. The divisionary components such as class, caste, religion, gender and linguist affiliations rather prevents the formation of  the pan nationalist identity. These divisions fiercely compete each other within the overall conceptually existing idea and identity of state in most of other parts of the world, which call themselves democracies. Needless to say these sub-identities prevail upon the national identity  in matters of  securing rights and privileges for the respective sub-identities exclusively. And the issue of national identity becomes easily fallible. With it also comes unaccountability towards the nation, and dishonest work culture as premiums. India is one leading example in the reverse order
of it. Learn from the American democracy for its people and if at all we need to copy Americans, it may be their total surrender to the national identity bringing in sincerity and commitment of the American state towards its citizens and the vice versa.
